Guadalajara dresses up and the government sponsors a series of events, activities, festivals and concerts during the course of a seven day festivities. The entire city is invited to take part in the festivities and the event has a flavor of tradition. The events take place throughout the city in such venues as the plazas. AprilGuadalajara International Marathon. This Marathon started in 1984 as an event to celebrate the anniversary of the city and has now become a yearly tradition. Every year the route of the event changes to make it more exciting and to take advantage of the beauty of the city. For those not audacious enough, a half mark is set and competitors are awarded medals for running half a marathon. Festival of the Tastoanes. This is a picturesque festival celebrated in the village of Nextipac, near Zapopan on July 25, during which the struggle between Saint Santiago and the Moors is reenacted.AugustBasilica of the Virgin of Zapopan festival. The most famous festival in Guadalajara is the Basilica of the Virgin of Zapopan celebrated with dances, fireworks and a fair. International Mariachi Fiesta. Mariachis from everywhere come to celebrate and play here in Guadalajara as a commemorative event of this great music. OctoberFiestas de Octubre (October Fest). This is Guadalajara's greatest party, lasting for a month and featuring all kinds of cultural and artistic events. The festival includes art exhibits, musical and sporting events, as well as social and folkloric activities of the region. The Benito Juarez Auditorium has been home to the main activities and features activities that the entire family can enjoy. There you can find carnival rides, food markets featuring local culinary delights as well as local tequila products, local handicrafts, a concert area with local musical artists and the Canica Azul (Blue Marble) children's area. The events are high quality, as well as affordable; some are free of charge. NovemberGuadalajara International Book Fair. This fair is now recognized as one of the most important of its kind in Latin America. The Guadalajara International Book Fair is an immense book fair in which publishing houses from many countries participate. It features a variety of cultural events, like daily conferences, literary prizes are awarded and musical concerts are performed. The event is held in the Expo Guadalajara building and the exhibition area has more than 75,000 square feet. Every year, the fair invites a country to participate as a special guest. December16-24 Dec. Las Posadas. Each night the faithful re-enact Joseph and Mary's search for posada (shelter) on their journey to Belen. For the less devout, it's an excuse for a party and reunions. Fiesta of the Virgin of Guadalupe. On December 12th, Guadalajara celebrates this traditional Mexican holiday of the Virgin Mary. Dancing, drinking and feasting are all part of the day-long festivities, plus the religious activities.
